Repair vs. Replacement of a Vehicle Windshield

The windshield is one of the most critical parts of a vehicle, as it helps preserve its structural integrity and protect the passengers from the elements. If the glass is chipped or has a small crack, the car owner needs to service it as soon as possible. However, how can drivers tell whether they should repair or replace their windshields?

When to repair a vehicle windshield

Fixing a windshield is usually less expensive than replacing it, but not all windshield damage is repairable. Professional car glass technicians can generally fix chips smaller than a dollar bill. For example, if the crack is less than two inches wide and 3/8 inches deep, they usually recommend repairing the problem. In some extreme cases, it is possible to repair chips that are up to three inches wide, depending on their shape and type.

Auto glass contractors typically use resins to repair chipped windshields. The resins are polished and cured, leaving a smooth finish and preventing the crack from spreading.

If fixing a windshield crack is possible, drivers should prioritize the repair. Even the smallest chips can spread seemingly overnight and require a replacement.

When to replace a vehicle windshield

Here are a few situations that typically require the driver to replace a cracked windshield.

Large chips

As previously discussed, any cracks longer than a dollar bill usually require the glass to be replaced. In addition, if the chip has a diameter larger than a quarter, the best option is to replace the glass.

Deep chips

Any crack or chip that reaches into the inner layers of laminated windshields warrants a replacement. Nevertheless, even surface cracks may require a replacement if they expose plastic layers within, causing them to discolor due to exposure to outside elements.

The windshield is tempered

There are two main types of windshield glass—laminated and tempered.

Laminated glass has a plastic segment sandwiched between two strong layers of glass. Rather than break into fragments or shatter upon impact, it generally holds together.

Tempered glass is manufactured differently. In the event of an accident, the glass breaks into small pieces, meaning a replacement is the only option. Most rear and side windows have tempered glass.

Inconveniently located crack

If the windshield is damaged on the driver’s side of the vehicle, replacing the glass is a better option than fixing it because repairs can leave residual marks which can obscure the driver’s view. The same is true for cracks that stretch from one side of the glass to the other, as they weaken the windshield’s structural integrity.

Too many chips or cracks

In most cases, windshields with three or more chips or cracks should be replaced. Repairing them isn’t enough to restore their strength.

Whether a windshield needs to be repaired or replaced, hiring a professional car glass technician is highly recommended. They’re well-versed in all types of glass and have the experience to do the work safely.
